Peter Maurer

Biography

CV /E Peter Maurer is President of the Basel Institute on Governance, a member of the Board of Directors of Zurich Insurance company, a Senior Fellow of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva and a member of the Foundation Board of Vontobel Foundation. He also serves amongst others on the advisory bodies of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the GSG Impact (the Global Steering Group for Impact) in London and of Elea Foundation. Previously, Mr. Maurer served as President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from 2012 to 2022. Before that, he was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Switzerland from 2010 to 2012, and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations from 2004 to 2010. He began his career in the Swiss diplomatic service in 1986, with various positions in Switzerland, South Africa and the U.S. Mr. Maurer studied History and Law at University of Bern and has a Doctorate in Contemporary History. His key interests turn around international relations, international law, negotiations and diplomacy. He has extensive first-hand experience in crisis contexts, conflict-prevention, humanitarian diplomacy, peacebuilding and human security. Er nimmt auch eine Reihe von beratenden Funktionen wahr, unter andern für das «International Institute for Strategic Studies» und die GSG-Impact («The Globale Steering Group for Impact») in London, sowie für die Elea Stiftung und die Stars Initiative in Zürich. Er ist auch Präsident des «Center of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiations” (CCHN). Während seiner Berufslaufbahn war Peter Maurer von 2012-2022 Präsident des Internationalen Komitees vom Roten Kreuz, Staatssekretär im EDA von 2010-2012 und Ständiger Vertreter der Schweiz bei den Vereinten Nationen in New York von 2004-2010. Er begann seine Karriere im diplomatischen Dienst der Schweiz 1986 und hielt verschiedene Posten in Südafrika, Bern und den USA inne. Peter Maurer studierte Geschichte, Staats- und Völkerrecht an der Universität Bern und schloss mit einem Doktorat in Neuerer Allgemeiner Geschichte ab. Seine Interessen kreisen um die Themen Internationale Beziehungen, Internationales Recht, Verhandlungen und Diplomatie. Er hat umfangreiche Erfahrungen in Krisengebieten, in humanitärer Diplomatie und friedenspolitischen Fragen, sowie in Fragen der Menschlichen Sicherheit.
