Biography

Anni Beukes is a past fellow of the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, University of Chicago. Her research focuses on poverty, place, and politics, examining how knowledge-making processes and technologies, particularly digital mapping tools, impact and serve marginalized communities. She worked for Slum Dwellers International (SDI) for four years, leading the KnowYourCity (KYC) data program to develop tools and methods for community-driven knowledge production among organized community groups, researchers, technologists, and software developers. She served on the Board of Directors of Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) from 2022 to 2024. Currently, she splits her time supporting the next phase of SDI’s KYC development and working on her dissertation on youth, infrastructure and urban water insecurity in Freetown, Sierra Leone, at the University of Bonn, Germany.
