  • Future Generations at the UN: Shaping Tomorrow, Today Short Abstract: The UN pioneers long-term governing, especially by including Future Generations in its decision-making. This topic will be central at the UN's Summit of the Future, shaping the “Pact for the Future” and its annexed Declaration for Future generations. The objective is to transform multilateral governance to ensure sustainable, future-oriented, and long-term policymaking, thereby contributing significantly to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.

Biography

Guy Ryder is the Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. He leads global policy coordination with a focus on the Summit of the Future and its follow-ups, and ensures strategic alignment within the Executive Office. Mr. Ryder also oversees coherence in the analysis presented to the Secretary-General and supports system-wide coordination, including the implementation of the Secretary-General’s "Call to Action for Human Rights." He chairs the Deputies Committee, oversees the secretariat to the Executive Committee and the Senior Management Group, and closely coordinates on matters related to the Chief Executives Board. Prior to his current position, Mr. Ryder served as Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva for two consecutive terms beginning in October 2012. His tenure at the ILO began in 1998 as Director of the Bureau for Workers' Activities, followed by his role as Director of the Office of the Director-General in 1999.
